Dear Tony, |

I have never tailgated before. I have swimmers. We are trying to get a tailgate together before the Maryland football game and I need help!
What's good for starters? I have chairs, a coleman stove, and a van.
Please let me know a simple way to get this together!

Dear Debby,
Knowing that you have swimmers means two things 1) they probably have endurance that could kill a camel, and 2) a metabolism that would bring an industrial garbage disposal to it's knees. Knowing that, you will need make sure you bring A LOT of food and something to keep them entertained. Make sure to have snacky foods (chips, trail mix, fruit) as well as filling foods (i.e. something you can put between two buns). There is nothing worse than not being fully stocked with goodies.
When it comes to your accessories, make sure you have enough chairs for all, a table to eat off of as well as a table to serve your food on, and if needed a place to put your Coleman stove.
Your van will be a perfect vehicle for tailgating, as it will allow you to transport and store things as well as provide you shelter. Don't forget to show a little team pride on your ride. Try a flag, a tent, or your neighbor's lawn ornament.
Here's a tip, make sure your van's stereo is loud enough to hear for the pre-game breakdown or a little 'gating music. You can also get a power inverter allowing you to bring a tv--but that might be a little much for your first tailgate.
Finally, bring something fun to do--grab a football, TailgateToss, or your kid's flippers and play some games. There is nothing better than a little friendly game of catch or a flipper/sword fight before the game. Remember, lawn darts have been outlawed for a reason.
Oh, and bring something to throw your trash in. Although you may have eating machines, plastics and aluminum cans just don't digest well.
Here's to you,
Tony |
